A large text-based fantasy treasure hunt
Acheton is a fantasy text adventure and treasure hunt set in a claustrophobic dungeon. Written by Jon Thackray, David Seal, and Jonathan Partington, it is a home-computer conversion of a mainframe adventure.
The game focuses on exploring the environment and solving item-based puzzles. Players interact by typing commands such as take bottle, with the world presented entirely through plain text. A help function provides graded hints for progression.
With more than 400 rooms and over 200 objects, Acheton is substantially larger in scale than Zork. The game was released for systems including the BBC Microcomputer System, ZX Spectrum, Amstrad CPC, Amstrad PCW, DOS, MS-DOS, Acorn Archimedes, and the Call-A-Computer time-shared mainframe computer system.
The BBC Micro version was originally published by Acornsoft and was later re-released by Topologika Software.
