A desert rally across the Sahara
African Raiders-01 recreates the African portion of the 11th Paris-Dakar Rally across Tunisia, Algeria, Niger, Burkina Faso, Mali, and Senegal in 1988–1989. Players drive through the Sahara from a third-person, behind-the-car perspective, following marked routes while managing navigation, fuel, and vehicle handling.
A compass indicates the route direction, while on-screen indicators track distance traveled and remaining fuel. If the car becomes lost in the sand, players can switch between 4x4 and 4x2 modes. Four-wheel drive is limited to a speed of 87, while two-wheel drive uses the car’s performance limits; each mode also interacts differently with route markers and sand debris. Gear changes allow the driver to move back and forth when obstacles block the car.
Rival drivers appear during both day and night, and finishing ahead of them is required to win the rally.
The game was developed by Coktel Vision and published by Tomahawk for Amiga, Atari ST, Atari ST/STE, DOS, and MS-DOS.
