Alien Breed 2: Assault continues the story of Alien Breed: Evolution, following Chief Engineer Theodore Conrad as he tries to escape the alien-infested starship Leopold.

Players move with the left stick and aim with the right while managing limited ammunition. Stations throughout the levels allow weapon upgrades and inventory purchases. Escort missions are also more prominent, requiring players to protect an A.I. partner while doors and barriers are unlocked.

The game introduces the Hyper Blaster, Rocket Launcher, and new Breed types. Its solo story spans five lengthy levels, which can later be replayed in Free Mode for high scores. Online or offline co-op features redesigned maps and a separate story that crosses with the solo campaign. Survival mode supports solo or co-op play as players defend against charging enemy A.I.
