Explorative shooter with varied levels, selectable weapons, and relentless mechanical bosses.
The briefing
Atomic Robo-Kid Special is an explorative shooter from UPL that adapts the arcade game's core elements for the NEC PC Engine and TurboGrafx-16. Its stages range from horizontal areas to maze-like environments, with missile fire sometimes required to destroy walls and open the way forward.
Button I selects from four collected weapons, while holding it locks the character's facing direction, allowing easier retreating fire. The missile and full-fire weapons are especially useful, while the forward and diagonal shots are more limited.
The game includes two distinct boss-area formats: encounters with a small enemy protected by a barrier that must be destroyed, and arena battles against a huge mechanical monster that relentlessly follows the player.
