A side-scrolling action platformer with deliberate gunplay and exploration.
The briefing
In Badlands Pete, the governor hires the desperado Pete to rescue his kidnapped daughters. Players guide Pete through side-scrolling levels while confronting bandits and other hostile characters.
Combat requires separate actions to draw, aim, and fire Pete’s gun. He cannot walk while the weapon is drawn, so it must be holstered for movement. Ammunition and health are limited, with supplies found in houses or near defeated enemies.
The game’s Strip-A-Motion feature allows Pete to move “inside” the screen, entering houses or passing behind obstacles. Developed by Frames, it was released in 1989 for Amiga and Atari ST systems.
