About this game

Ballblazer is a one-on-one futuristic sports game created by Lucasfilm Games. It combines elements of basketball and soccer on a flat, checkerboard playfield, with each player viewing their half of the arena from a first-person perspective.

Players control craft called rotofoils and compete against another human or a computer-controlled droid with ten difficulty levels. A rotofoil gains possession by running into the floating ball, then carries it in a force field or fires it toward the opponent’s goal. Players can also knock the ball away from an opponent.

Moving goalposts become narrower as goals are scored. Carrying the ball through the goal earns one point, a close-range shot earns two, and a successful long-range shot earns three. The combined score is capped at ten, creating a tug-of-war scoring system. The match ends when a player reaches ten points or time expires; tied matches continue in sudden death.

The game was originally released for the Atari 8-bit family and later appeared on systems including the Atari 5200, Apple II, ZX Spectrum, Amstrad CPC, Commodore 64, MSX, Atari 7800, and Nintendo Famicom.
