The briefing
Barry McGuigan World Championship Boxing is a boxing game for 8-bit home computers. Players guide a created boxer through the rankings, earning purse money and eventually pursuing a bout against Barry McGuigan.
Players can customize their boxer’s style, race, hair, and shorts. Before each fight, they choose an opponent ranked below, at the same level, or above them. Higher-ranked opponents offer faster progress and larger rewards, but present a greater challenge.
Time before a fight can be spent training in weights, sparring, road work, the heavy bag, or the light bag. These activities affect stamina, strength, and endurance in different ways. Opponent summaries provide information about their attributes before a bout is selected.
During fights, players can use the cross, block, body punch, jab, hook, and uppercut. Some opponents can be defeated quickly, while others require several rounds. After each round, the game reports the points scored and the audience’s excitement level.
