Batten Tanuki no Daibouken

Batten Tanuki no Daibouken is a 1985 action game for MSX computers, developed and published by Tecno Soft. It follows a kung-fu-trained tanuki warrior who travels through a forest to rescue villagers kidnapped by the evil Count Wolf.

The game combines side-scrolling combat with large-scale exploration. Its world spans more than 400 screens arranged across parallel paths, with arrows allowing the hero to move between areas. Players must search for keys and other items, improve the tanuki’s abilities, and locate Wolf Castle.

Enemies constantly pursue the hero, while the forest’s many holes can be used to defeat opponents—but are fatal if the tanuki falls into them. A map item provides only a vague location marker, encouraging players to chart the interconnected world themselves. Although there are no traditional continues, a password system preserves collected items.
