A fast-paced rail shooter against waves of zombies and monstrous bosses
The briefing
Beast Busters is a rail shooter in the style of Operation Wolf. Players take on the role of Johnny Justice or Sammy Stately, while Paul Patriot is available in the arcade version, and fight their way out of a city overwhelmed by zombies and other hostile creatures.
The action demands accurate shooting and careful resource management. The machine gun can defeat enemies with sustained fire, while grenades are reserved for especially dangerous targets or clearing groups from the screen. Pickups include standard grenades, electro grenades, and napalm bombs. Enemies attack with guns, Molotov cocktails, knives, and direct leaps; thrown knives can be shot out of the air with precise aim.
The arcade release features three mounted guns for simultaneous three-player action. Home conversions support up to two players. Scrolling shifts in several directions, including pseudo-3D sequences, as the player faces large enemy groups and bosses such as a zombie punk that mutates into a dog, a blob-like snake-headed creature, and a jeep that comes to life.
Released in 1988, Beast Busters was developed by SNK and published by SNK and Activision, Inc. It is listed for Arcade, Amiga, Atari ST/STE, Commodore Amiga, and Final Burn Alpha Neo.
