Puzzle / Maze-Blocks game for arcade and home platforms
The briefing
Boxy Boy, known in Japan as Souko Ban Deluxe, is a puzzle game based on the Sokoban series by Thinking Rabbit. Developed by Namco for Namco System 1 hardware, it applies the classic crate-pushing rules to an arcade format.
Players guide Rabi-kun through 55 rounds, pushing objects into their required positions. Each round has a timer, which does not reset when the player restarts the round. Running out of time allows a continue from the current round with a full timer.
Players can begin from the first, twelfth, twenty-third, thirty-fourth, or forty-fifth round. Five question-marked rounds correspond to stages whose numbers are multiples of eleven, with access to each following a related completed round. Completing stages in few enough steps can award a “Best Steps” or “Good Steps” bonus.
Boxy Boy is categorized as a Puzzle and Maze / Blocks game. Some of its music was later reused in Namco’s unreleased prototype Puzzle Club.
