The briefing

About this game

Cabal is an action-focused third-person arcade shooter released in 1987. Players control an unnamed commando viewed from behind as they attack enemy troops and destroy military bases.

The commando begins behind a protective wall that can be damaged and destroyed by enemy fire. A limitless-ammunition gun handles standard attacks, while a limited supply of grenades provides additional firepower. An enemy gauge tracks progress through each stage; destroying foes and bringing down certain structures depletes it. Once the gauge is emptied, the remaining buildings collapse and the next stage begins.

Weapons and Power-Ups

Destroyed objects can release power-ups, including an extremely fast machine gun, an automatic shotgun with a wider crosshair, extra grenades, and bonus points.

Gameplay Features

  • Single-player and simultaneous cooperative two-player modes.
  • Trackball controls for character movement and aiming, with later board revisions supporting a joystick.
  • A rolling move provides invincible movement but prevents attacking.
  • Boss fights restart from the beginning when the player dies.
