A text-command adventure of Arthur’s search for the Holy Grail
The briefing
Conquests of Camelot: The Search for the Grail is a 1989 adventure game set in an alternate ninth-century world where Camelot has been cursed by famine and drought. King Arthur leaves the kingdom to search for the missing knights Launcelot, Gawaine, and Galahad, while also pursuing the mysterious Holy Grail.
The game uses typed commands that combine verbs and objects, with some shortcuts for common actions. Its challenges range from exploration, riddles, and information gathering to jousting sequences and basic money management. Many situations allow different solutions, and the game can be advanced even when certain quests remain unfinished.
Arthur’s actions are evaluated through three measures: skill, wisdom, and soul. While skill reflects action sequences and wisdom rewards cultural knowledge, soul judges the moral quality of his choices; a poor soul score can lead to a bad ending. The story blends historical settings with mythical locations and a world in which pagan deities once existed alongside the rise of Christian worship.
