A sword-fighting beat ’em up with magic, mounted travel, and health-based progression
The briefing
Dahna: Megami Tanjou, also known as Dahna: Birth of a Goddess, is a beat ’em up with RPG elements, developed and published by IGS.
Players control Dahna as she travels through horizontally and vertically scrolling stages. She attacks with a sword and can jump to two heights, duck, and crawl. Her magic meter has several colored levels, with each level producing a different magical effect. Magic and health orbs dropped by defeated enemy mages help sustain her during the adventure.
Dahna begins the game riding a giant and later travels on creatures including a horse and a griffin. While mounted, she cannot use magic. Defeating enemies and collecting orbs grants experience, and level upgrades increase only her health points.
The game was released on December 20, 1991, for Sega Genesis and Sega Mega Drive/Genesis.
