A ten-event athletics challenge inspired by the modern decathlon

The briefing

About this game

Daley Thompson's Decathlon presents the complete modern decathlon across two days of competition.

Events

  • Day 1: 100 metres, long jump, shot putt, high jump, and 400 metres
  • Day 2: 110 hurdles, pole vault, discus, javelin, and 1500 metres

Gameplay

You begin with three lives. Failing to reach an event's minimum standard costs one life, while completing the 1500 metres sends you back to Day 1 with tougher qualification requirements. Running events use alternating left- and right-leg inputs, demanding rapid timing and making the game well known for its vigorous joystick movement.

The game was developed by David A. Collier and Ocean Software and published by Ocean Software for Amstrad CPC, Commodore 64, Commodore C64/128/MAX, and Sinclair ZX Spectrum.
