A multi-event sporting challenge with tougher targets and joystick-based events

The briefing

About this game

Daley Thompson's Super-Test is a multi-event sports game built around a series of sporting challenges, each with its own world record and target time, distance, or score. Missing a target costs one of three lives.

After all events are completed, the player repeats them with more difficult targets. Events include cycling, giant slalom, penalties, pistol shooting, rowing, ski jumping, springboard diving, and tug of war. The ZX Spectrum 128K version adds the 100 metres hurdles, javelin, sprint, and triple jump, bringing its total to twelve events.

Events and controls

  • Rowing, cycling, and the 100 metres hurdles focus on rapid joystick movement.
  • The penalty shoot-out requires timing the run-up and pressing fire to set the shot angle.
  • Ski jumping depends on correctly timing both the launch and landing.
  • Tug of war involves selecting a competitor and attempting to out-waggle them.
  • In the triple jump, the player times each of the three jump phases, with 45 degrees described as optimal.
  • For the hurdles, the player runs and presses fire to clear each hurdle.
  • Pistol shooting challenges the player to position a sight and fire near the centre within a limited time. The sight can move only upward and toward the target, making over-movement difficult to correct.

The game was developed and published by Ocean Software and released in 1984 for the Amstrad CPC, BBC Microcomputer System, Commodore C64/128/MAX, and Sinclair ZX Spectrum.
