A classic platform adventure through a dangerous castle

The briefing

About this game

Dark Castle is a 1986 platform game originally released for the Macintosh and later ported to systems including Atari ST, Commodore Amiga, MS-DOS, Philips CD-i, and Sega Genesis. Duncan must navigate the castle, avoid hazards, solve occasional puzzles, and confront the evil Black Knight.

Gameplay

Duncan can run, jump, duck, and throw a limited supply of rocks. Bags provide additional rocks, while elixir bottles offer a one-time antidote to bites from the castle’s rats and bats. A magic shield and the ability to hurl fireballs can also aid his journey.

The game begins in the Great Hall, where four doors lead to different routes. To defeat the Black Knight, Duncan must pull several levers that topple him from his throne. Three skill levels are available, with Advanced mode adding more enemies and extra surprises.

Audio and Development

Dark Castle was designed and illustrated by Mark Pierce and programmed by Jonathan Gay. It is noted for its use of sampled sounds, while its opening features storm clouds, thunderclaps, and the opening notes of Bach’s Toccata and Fugue in D minor.
