A 1990 platform-puzzle game about restoring cubist creations

The briefing

About this game

In Devious Designs, a scientist inspired by Picasso’s cubist paintings creates a weapon that turns objects and monuments into cubes. A 007-style secret agent must restore them by assembling scattered geometric pieces.

Each level is a timed screen with translucent slots for the pieces. The agent can walk on walls, lift objects, and use a gun to move pieces, defeat enemies, and solve the puzzle before time runs out. Falling objects provide points, while power-ups include explosives, extra time, extra lives, and blocks that fill a slot.

If the timer expires, the level resets and a life is lost. Taking too long can also cause a random enemy to appear. The game starts with six lives and includes a password system.
