A cooperative beat ’em up with expanded combat and selectable fighter teams
The briefing
Double Dragon 3: The Rosetta Stone expands the classic beat ’em up formula with support for up to three simultaneous players. Billy and Jimmy Lee return, joined by Sonny, while additional fighter teams—including the Urquidez, Chin, and Ōyama brothers—can become available during play.
The game returns to the original punch-and-kick control style, replacing the directional attack system from Double Dragon II: The Revenge. New techniques include running, a running head-butt, a belly-to-back throw, a jumping knee drop, and cooperative attacks such as the back-to-back hurricane kick and triangle jump kick.
In its overseas version, stage shops offer power-ups and new moves in exchange for credits. The “Extra Guys” item adds reserve fighters, allowing defeated characters to be replaced by members of other sibling teams. Players can hold up to three reserve fighters, with availability varying by stage.
The Japanese release removes the item shops and lets players select from the available fighter types at the start. Weapons appear in certain stages instead, and the game reduces enemy damage compared with the overseas versions.
The game was developed by East Technology and The Sales Curve, and published by East Technology / Technos Japan, Storm, and Technōs Japan. It was released for arcade and Atari ST, among the listed versions.
