The briefing

About this game

Exile is a single-player action-adventure game originally published for the Acorn Electron and BBC Micro by Superior Software, with later versions published by Audiogenic for additional platforms.

Designed and programmed by Peter Irvin and Jeremy Smith, the game is notable for its complete Newtonian motion model. Its physics and technical ambition were considered exceptional for home computers of the period, particularly on 8-bit systems.

Technical Notes

The standard 32 kB BBC Model B version uses a specially defined screen resolution smaller than full-screen MODE 2, freeing video memory for game data. Because the Electron's video hardware does not support this approach, additional machine-code data remains visible around the screen border.

Genre and Platforms

Exile combines action, adventure, arcade, platform, puzzle, and role-playing elements. Listed platforms include the Acorn Electron, BBC Microcomputer System, Commodore 64, Amiga, Amiga CD32, Atari ST, Atari ST/STE, Commodore C64/128/MAX, NEC TurboGrafx-CD, and Sega Genesis.
