Turn-based fantasy strategy across five continents

The briefing

About this game

Fantasy General is a turn-based strategy game set in a fantasy world combining traditional magic with steampunk and high-tech elements. The Shadowlord and his forces have conquered most of the world, and the player takes the role of one of four heroes charged with leading the resistance.

Gameplay

Most of the game takes place on hex-based battle maps with varied terrain. Unit effectiveness depends on the environment: cavalry excels on plains but is hindered by swamps, making army composition and tactical adaptation essential.

The game includes 10 unit types drawn from four realms, along with extensive upgrades. Between battles, players handle basic recruiting, research priorities, and financial management.

Modes

  • Campaign: Choose one of four heroes, each with special abilities, and fight across five continents before confronting the Shadowlord on Fire Isle.
  • Arena: Play a single battle against a computer-controlled or human opponent.

Fantasy General uses a modified engine associated with Panzer General. It was developed by Strategic Simulations and published by SNEG for DOS, MS-DOS, and PC (Microsoft Windows).
