FIFA Soccer 09 is a football game built around more responsive and realistic physical action. Its updated engine introduces 500 new animation sequences, 360-degree collision detection, and collision outcomes influenced by player speed, direction, strength, and momentum.

The new shielding system adds tactical control over possession, allowing players to slow the pace, protect the ball, and push off defenders to create space, with the possibility of being penalized for a foul.
