Namco's Formula 1 arcade racer with eight-cabinet multiplayer
The briefing
Final Lap is a straightforward Formula 1 racing game by Namco and is regarded as a spiritual successor to Pole Position. The arcade version features a replica of the Suzuka Circuit and supports linking up to eight cabinets for a large multiplayer race.
The Nintendo versions use different features and mechanics. They include split-screen racing for one or two players, plus a tournament mode in which up to eight players take turns. Races begin on an oval track in New York before moving to more challenging courses in locations including Mexico and Monaco.
Before each race, cars can be customized using allotted points for tires, engine, brakes, and nitro. Nitro is activated by pressing up on the control pad, while collisions and contact with roadside billboards can affect the car's handling.
