A vertical-scrolling arcade shooter set in 2096

The briefing

About this game

In Flak, a rogue CPU called Computer Control is attempting to take over the universe. Piloting an AGX Hypersonic Fighter, you must advance through a constantly scrolling battlefield, bombing Flak Batteries, buildings, and other defences on the way to the fortress containing the CPU.

The game is a top-down, vertical-scrolling shoot-'em-up controlled with a joystick and a sight positioned ahead of the fighter. Enemy defences fire at your ship, and losing all four lives ends your attempt. Flak supports one or two players, with players taking turns after a life is lost.

Released in 1983, Flak was developed by F. David Thorpe and Funsoft and published by Funsoft and U.S. Gold Ltd. It appeared on Apple II, Atari 8-bit, Commodore C64/128/MAX, and Sinclair ZX Spectrum.
