Garyo Retsuden

Garyo Retsuden is an overhead run-and-gun game with a Romance of the Three Kingdoms motif. Players guide Liu Bei, Guan Yu, or Zhang Fei on a mission to rescue the princess from Lu Bu.

The three heroes use different weapons—bow and arrow, axes, and throwing knives—but otherwise play similarly. Levels contain weapon upgrades, protective suits that absorb hits, and shoes that increase walking speed.

Horses appear at regular intervals and can absorb additional damage. They can also be healed by collecting carrots found throughout the stages. The game was developed and published by Data East and appears to have been released only in Japan.
