A character-driven interactive fiction adventure about exile, cooperation, and three unusual quests.
The briefing
Gnome Ranger follows Ingrid Bottomlow, a gifted gnome exiled from her family by a teleporting spell. Lost in the forest, she must be kept safe while completing three linked tasks involving an evil witch, the Riddle of the Shrinking Teapot, and precious stones.
The adventure emphasizes object manipulation, character interaction, and cooperation over traditional map-making. Commands such as FOLLOW, FIND, and GO TO simplify travel, while instructions using THEN, FIND, and GIVE allow other characters to help solve puzzles. Characters have their own aims and motives, making collaboration central to progress.
BRIEF and VERBOSE text modes are available. A recurring joke alters words beginning with “n” by adding a “g,” producing terms such as “gnorth” and “gnugget.” Disk versions include graphics, except for the Atari 8-bit and Apple II releases, which remain text-only.
