Maze-based arcade action with water, fires, and fire-born enemies
The briefing
Guzzler is an arcade action-puzzle game developed by Tehkan. Players control a character who absorbs water, then uses it to put out fires scattered throughout a maze. The fires can also create fire-based enemies that are defeated in a similar way.
Water storage is limited to three shots at a time, adding a resource-management element to the maze-based gameplay. The game was released across the Amstrad CPC, Commodore 16, Commodore C64/128/MAX, Commodore Plus/4, Sega SC-3000, and Sega SG-1000.
The SG-1000 version was ported by Tsukuda Original and carries Othello Multivision branding. It is described as the only home port of Guzzler. This version includes three maps and fewer enemies than the arcade game, while its sound differs because the SG-1000 release omits the high-pitched squeak heard with each step in the arcade version.
The SG-1000 conversion is also noted for starting gameplay without warning and for a pause feature that appears to work but resumes the game after a few seconds.
