The briefing

About this game

Gyrodine is a vertically scrolling shooter that puts players in control of the Gyrodyne aircraft. Its gameplay combines air-to-air and air-to-ground attacks across continuous stages, with enemy encounters alternating between quiet stretches and sudden swarms.

Combat

The game provides two control buttons and three weapons. One fires a pair of bullets at enemy aircraft, while the other operates twin machine guns aimed at the ground. Pressing both buttons launches a missile with limited heat-seeking capability, meaning the two guns cannot be fired simultaneously. Moving left or right progressively angles the guns in that direction until the joystick is released or moved the other way.

Terrain and Scoring

Gyrodine features detailed scenery, including people, cars, houses, and beach umbrellas. Neutral characters and objects affect the score: destroying unarmed civilians incurs a significant penalty.

The game has been compared to Xevious and 1942, while offering a less intense pace. It was released for arcade systems, Family Computer, Nintendo Famicom, Microsoft MSX, MSX, PC-8800 Series, and Sharp X1.
