Word-guessing puzzle competition across nine Hangman game modes

The briefing

About this game

Hangman is a word-guessing puzzle and strategy game released on May 1, 1978. Its nine game modes range from solo competition against the computer to head-to-head play and custom word entry.

Game Modes

  • Games 1–4: One player competes against the computer using vocabulary ranging from first–third grade through high school level.
  • Games 5–8: Two players take turns selecting letters to solve computer-generated words. Correct guesses grant another turn, while both players share 11 incorrect selections. The first player to reach five points wins.
  • Game 9: One player creates a word of one to six letters using the joystick, and the opposing player receives 11 guesses to complete it.

The game was developed by Atari and Milton Bradley, and published by Atari and Texas Instruments. It was released for Atari 2600, Elektor TV Games Computer, Texas Instruments TI 99-4A, and VC 4000.
