Arcade shooter featuring a Sea Harrier assault mission
The briefing
Harrier Attack is an arcade shooter released in 1982 by Durell Software. Players control a Sea Harrier in a side-view, right-to-left scrolling environment, taking off from an aircraft carrier to attack ships and land targets.
The mission also requires avoiding missiles and enemy fighters before returning to land on the carrier. The game was inspired by the 1982 Falklands War, although its scenario is fictional. A notable gameplay hazard is the possibility of bombing the carrier during takeoff, leaving the aircraft without a landing destination on the return flight.
Harrier Attack was developed for the Amstrad CPC, Commodore 64, Commodore C64/128/MAX, and Sinclair ZX Spectrum. Its compact executable was under 9 kilobytes, supporting fast cassette loading, and the game sold more than 250,000 copies.
