Fantasy shooter sequel with three playable heroes and interconnected hub-based levels
The briefing
Hexen: Beyond Heretic is a fantasy shooter sequel to Heretic, built on an enhanced DOOM engine. After the Serpent Riders devastate the world, three surviving humans set out to take revenge on Korax.
Players choose between the Fighter, Cleric, and Mage. Each character has four unique weapons along with distinct levels of speed and armor. Returning features include vertical looking, flying, and an inventory system.
Hexen replaces a straightforward sequence of levels with an interconnected hub system. Levels link through portals, and progress often requires traveling between areas to solve puzzles. The game also includes weather effects, jumping, earthquakes, and destructible objects such as trees and vases.
It was developed by Probe Entertainment and Raven Software and published by GT Interactive and id Software.
