Konix Multisystem's forgotten game comes to life with "Llamasoft: The Jeff Minter Story", giving players a glimpse into the classic console that never was.

Digital Eclipse Revives a Retro Gaming Legend

In a fascinating twist for retro gaming enthusiasts, Digital Eclipse has announced the release of "Llamasoft: The Jeff Minter Story" on modern gaming platforms, providing an extensive overview of the acclaimed British developer's career. This compilation is significant for including the first-ever public release of a game developed for the ill-fated Konix Multisystem—a revolutionary British console that ultimately never saw the light of day.

The Konix Multisystem was designed to be a game-changer in the late '80s and early '90s, offering an immersive gaming experience with a multi-function controller that could act as a steering wheel, flight yoke, or motorcycle handles, complete with force feedback and even an optional interactive seat. High expectations were set by its impressive internal technology developed by Flare Technology, who would later contribute to the Atari Jaguar's creation. Despite the promise, the Konix Multisystem became engulfed by financial issues plaguing its parent company, leading to a series of delayed release dates and, finally, the console's cancellation after Konix ran out of money.

Hopes for the Konix Multisystem dissipated after Konix was forced to sell its joystick division to Spectravision, a move made out of desperation to keep the company afloat. The planned 1989 release slipped into 1990, and by the time an August launch was scheduled, the end of Konix was already in sight. As a result, the Konix Multisystem became a mythical piece of gaming history, with no mass-produced units and a host of games left unreleased.

Among the planned library for the console was Llamasoft's "Attack of the Mutant Camels '89", created by Jeff Minter. Through the efforts of Digital Eclipse, players will soon have the chance to experience this game, playing it on modern devices such as Xbox, Switch, and PC. This opportunity comes 34 years after the Konix Multisystem was officially declared defunct, offering a rare window into what could have been a pivotal moment in gaming.

Chris Kohler, Digital Eclipse's editorial director, shared his excitement about the project in an exclusive interview, stating that not only will players be able to enjoy a game for a console that never launched, but they will do so while recognizing Minter's enduring status as an indie developer. Minter, renowned for his independence and innovation in game design, retains ownership of his games, reflecting his commitment to remaining a true indie developer, never being absorbed by larger corporations.

"Llamasoft: The Jeff Minter Story" is set to launch on March 13th, making it available on platforms including Steam, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, and Xbox Series X/S. This release is not just a celebration of Jeff Minter's influential career, but also a moment of revival for a piece of gaming technology that, while never commercially released, formed a fascinating chapter in the industry's history.

Fans of Minter's unique gaming style, as well as those intrigued by the stories of gaming's past, will find this collection a treasure trove of information and entertainment. The inclusion of a game like "Attack of the Mutant Camels '89" highlights the ingenuity and creativity prevalent in the gaming industry during the late '80s and early '90s—a time when imagination knew no bounds, and the boundaries of technology were endlessly pushed by visionary individuals like Jeff Minter. By bringing the Konix Multisystem's legacy into the modern era, Digital Eclipse is providing a new generation with the opportunity to witness the nearly lost gems of gaming history and appreciate the forward-thinking creativity that remains relevant and celebrated within the gaming culture.
