The classic MSX Cyberpunk RPG Illusion City receives an English translation, allowing Western audiences to experience its futuristic narrative and gameplay.

Illusion City RPG Now Playable in English

In the world of classic role-playing games, fans often celebrate when a beloved title that was never localized gets translated into English. Recently, the cyberpunk RPG Illusion City has joined the ranks of such games, much to the delight of Western audiences who have long awaited the opportunity to experience its intricate story and gameplay in a language they understand.

Illusion City, a game that made its original debut on the MSX Turbo R system back in 1991, has been known for its compelling setting and plot. The narrative unfolds in a 21st-century Hong Kong, ravaged by demonic forces that leave the city in ruins. In this dystopian landscape, players are introduced to the protagonist, Tianren, a skilled demon hunter whose mission is to investigate the SIVA corporation. This mysterious entity is responsible for rebuilding Hong Kong after the devastation, but as Tianren delves deeper into the city's dark underbelly, he uncovers truths that could shake the foundations of the world as he knows it.

The game's venture into cyberpunk thematics combines the appeal of technology and mysticism, giving it a distinct flavor in the RPG genre. For a time, its popularity soared in Japan, yet it never crossed the seas towards the West through an official release. Versions of the game were later made available on various other computer systems, including the PC-88 and PC-98, the FM Towns, the X68000, and even the Sega Mega-CD, demonstrating the game’s versatility and enduring appeal.

The quest for Illusion City's English translation has been a labor of love carried out by a dedicated team of enthusiasts. The project has been spearheaded by user 232 who handled the bulk of the translation and research, Max Iwamoto, who was responsible for reverse engineering, coding, GFX, fonts, redesign, and beta testing, and Vampier who contributed to proofing and beta testing the adaptation. Together, they managed to deconstruct the original game, extract its text, and weave in the English language in a manner that stays true to the game's original spirit and intention.

The announcement of the English translation caused ripples of excitement throughout the gaming community, particularly among retro gaming enthusiasts and fans of classic RPGs. With the MSX celebrating its 40th anniversary along with the advent of new hardware, there's been a resurgence of interest in the titles that defined the early days of the system, with Illusion City being a significant part of that heritage. Thankfully, the translation project is already in beta testing, signaling that a full release is on the horizon.

The anticipation was further stoked when a trailer was put out to showcase the main features of the translation. The video gave players a glimpse into the immersive world and narrative now accessible in English, highlighting the care and detail the team put into localizing the game.

Despite the original game now being over thirty years old, Illusion City's translation stands as a testament to the timeless nature of its story and gameplay. It's a reminder that good stories and solid gameplay transcend language and cultural barriers, and thanks to the unwavering dedication of its translators, a whole new audience can experience a piece of RPG history.

As with many fan translations, it's important to note the legal gray area that they often exist in. However, for many fans, the value of such projects outweighs the possible complications, as they offer a chance to breathe new life into games that would otherwise remain locked away by language barriers.

With Illusion City's English translation nearing completion, players from all over the world will soon have the enjoyable opportunity to immerse themselves in the cyberpunk streets of future Hong Kong. They will guide Tianren through his journey to unravel the tangled web of corporate and supernatural intrigue lying at the heart of Illusion City—a true classic that continues to captivate players to this day.
