A multi-section space action game with shooting, survival and trading

The briefing

About this game

Awesome is a multi-section space-based game released in 1989. The player attempts to cross a harsh galaxy without sufficient funds or firepower, progressing through several action-focused stages to reach each planet.

Gameplay

Each journey begins with an overhead shooting section against rocks that break into progressively smaller blocks. A scanner provides a rough indication of their locations. This is followed by an into-the-screen shoot-out against an enemy moving backwards and forwards.

The final approach to a planet takes place on foot from an overhead view. Contact with enemies costs time rather than energy, and the player has three attempts to reach the trading centre in time.

Trading and upgrades

After reaching a planet, trading becomes central to progression. Players can purchase equipment to improve the ship, along with additional shields and firepower, balancing their choices according to the next stage.
