A strategic flight simulation set in a fictional Soviet Union versus NATO conflict
The briefing
Birds of Prey is a flight simulation set during a fictional conflict between the Soviet Union and NATO and its allies. Players choose either side and can fly up to 40 different aircraft while managing the wider battle campaign.
Pilots operate from three land bases and two aircraft carriers on each side. Enemy attacks can damage these facilities, making them unavailable until repaired and reducing the aircraft available during the campaign. An autopilot mode assists with longer journeys when enemy forces are distant.
Mission types include air intercept, air superiority, long-range bombing, bomber escort, close support and ground attack, border or sea patrol, reconnaissance, troop drop, supply drop, stealth bombing, stealth reconnaissance, and test pilot missions. Test pilot assignments feature the X-15 and X-29 and are separate from the main campaign.
The NATO-aligned side includes aircraft such as the A-10A, F-14A+ Tomcat, F-15E Eagle, F/A-18A Hornet, F-117A, B-2 Stealth Bomber, B-52H Stratofortress, Harrier GR. Mk 3, Mirage F.1E, Rafale A, Tornado F Mk.3, and JAS-39 Gripen. The Soviet side features aircraft including the MiG-21, MiG-23, MiG-25, MiG-27, MiG-29, Su-24, Su-25, Su-27, Tu-95, Tu-26, and Yak-38.
