A medieval castle construction and management game

The briefing

About this game

Castles is a construction and management simulation with adventure and strategy elements. Players build up to eight castles in different regions of western England and Wales, beginning each scenario with a largely empty map featuring terrain elements such as trees and water.

Castle designs can include gatehouses, walls, and round or square towers. Individual components may be customized for height and thickness, while defensive additions include boiling-oil cauldrons on walls and arrow slits in towers. Resource management is essential, since oversized or overly complex designs can exhaust the available regional supplies before construction is complete.

Developed by Quicksilver Software and published by Interplay, Castles was released in 1990 for platforms including Amiga, Atari ST, DOS, FM Towns, Mac, Windows, and Sharp X68000.
