A Direction-Based Martial Arts Fighting Game

The briefing

About this game

Chop Suey is a one- or two-player martial arts fighting game for Atari 8-bit computers, including the Atari 800. Its combat system is built around directional joystick inputs: left, right, up, down, and diagonal movements perform different fighting techniques, while the single button changes the fighter’s facing direction.

Instead of a traditional health bar, each fighter has a pain bar. Once the bar is full, the next successful attack causes a temporary takedown and reduces the bar. A fighter is eliminated after eight takedowns. Matches are further complicated by deadly scorpions that can fall from ceiling vents, causing an instant takedown if they are not avoided.

The game is notable for its large, screen-proportional character sprites. Chop Suey was developed by Adam Billyard and published by Antic Software.
