Contender

Contender is an arcade-style boxing game for PlayStation, released January 12, 1999. It offers Exhibition, VS., Main Event, and Tournament modes.

Game Modes

• Exhibition: Choose a boxer and fight a computer-controlled opponent.
• VS.: Two players compete against each other in the ring.
• Tournament: Compete through a boxing tournament.
• Main Event: Select one of eight boxers, each with different life, power, speed, and endurance skills, then progress through Local, National, and World ranks by defeating 40 opponents. After winning the World Championship, defend the title against challengers.

Boxing and Progression

Boxers can throw jabs, uppercuts, hooks, and crosses, while defensive techniques include ducking, weaving, and blocking high or low. Winning matches improves skills, and training between bouts allows players to spar with their trainer. Progress in Main Event mode also unlocks boxers for Exhibition mode.
