Top-down combat racing with upgrades, hazards, and championship progression
The briefing
Death Rally is a top-down action racing game in which speed is only part of the strategy. Players begin with $495 and a basic car, then compete across a championship of increasingly difficult races to earn money for better vehicles and equipment.
Races are selected from 19 tracks and feature four drivers competing over a specified number of laps. Starting positions are based on the championship standings, while victory goes to the first driver across the finish line—or the last one still running. The long-term objective is to reach the top of the championship table and defeat the Adversary on a special track.
Six car models are available, with upgrades for the engine, tires, and armor. These improve top speed, traction, and resistance to damage from opponents, mines, and collisions. Players can also purchase one-race items from the underground market, including land mines, rocket fuel, and a mechanic bribe that interferes with the best-ranked opponent.
Boosters provide short bursts of speed, while track pickups can restore boost, ammunition, vehicle condition, or money. Larger money and repair pickups offer greater rewards. Additional bonuses can be earned for destroying all rivals, finishing without damage, winning streaks, and completing sponsor missions.
Death Rally was released in 1996 for DOS, Mac, and PC platforms. It was developed by Remedy Entertainment and published by GT Interactive Software.
