A third-person survival horror shooter set in a quarantined Antarctic facility
The briefing
Extermination is a PlayStation 2 adventure horror shooter developed by Deep Space Inc. and published by Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. Released on July 24, 2001, it follows Marine Special Forces operative Dennis Riley as he investigates a distress signal from Fort Stewart, a top-secret installation in Antarctica.
A mysterious plague has transformed the facility’s life forms into hostile creatures. Riley must eliminate the threat while avoiding infection, using an upgradeable Special Purpose Rifle with scope, ammunition, and shotgun enhancements. The game is presented primarily from a third-person perspective, with a manual first-person aiming view available for precise shooting and environmental awareness.
Infection is tracked as a percentage. At 100 percent, a parasite spreads through Riley’s body, severely reducing his health and making hazards such as water especially dangerous. Treatment requires the MTS and a medical bed within the installation; without them, the infection eventually transforms him into a zombie-like mutant.
