A psychedelic 3D maze adventure of exploration, combat, and inventory puzzles.
The briefing
Gates of Dawn is a 1985 maze-based action and puzzle game for the Commodore 64 and Commodore C64/128/MAX. The player controls a knight seeking the mystery of the mind by collecting four objects—iron, stone, fire, and ice—hidden throughout a 64-room maze.
The maze is presented in 3D, with psychedelic wall patterns and colors, and most rooms contain monsters. A map charts explored rooms while an arrow indicates the knight’s facing direction. The player begins with five lives, 10,000 strength, and a sword. Monsters can reduce strength or cost a life, while the sword can destroy them when placed at the top of the inventory.
The inventory holds up to five items. The item at the top can be examined, dropped, or used through typed commands, but these actions must be selected within a short time.
