The briefing

About this game

Gen'ei Toshi: Illusion City is a Japanese-style role-playing game set in a devastated Hong Kong at the beginning of the 21st century. Following the “demon-coming crisis,” the city is isolated, ravaged by disease, and controlled by the corporation SIVA, which has declared the territory to be New Hong Kong.

Players take the role of Tianren, a demon-hunter known as a “diver.” Alongside Meihong, he explores the city, gathers information, accepts missions, and investigates SIVA and the supernatural beings drawn from Chinese mythology.

Gameplay

  • The game takes place entirely within a large city divided into districts, with no overworld.
  • Enemies are visible on the field, allowing many encounters to be avoided.
  • Combat is turn-based and presented from an over-the-shoulder perspective.
  • Story-driven party members join as dictated by the plot, with three active combatants.
  • Weapons and armor can be purchased or discovered in dungeons.
  • Weapon proficiencies improve through repeated use, while firearms consume specific ammunition.
  • Some characters can use offensive, supportive, and healing techniques.

The game features a realistic visual approach to its locations and characters, with an aesthetic closer to contemporary Western presentation than traditional Japanese anime.
