Tactical sailing-ship combat in the Napoleonic era

The briefing

About this game

Broadsides is a tactical simulation of ship-to-ship combat between sailing vessels from the late 18th and early 19th centuries.

Gameplay

The game offers two modes. In arcade mode, players steer, maneuver, set a course, and fire their guns while managing the pace of reloading. The tactical mode places players on the quarterdeck, where they make the decisions expected of historical ship captains.

Players can use the provided historical ships or design custom frigates and ships of the line, choosing their construction, rigging, armament, and crew.

Victory Conditions

  • Sink the opposing ship.
  • Accumulate enough points to force the enemy to surrender.
  • A battle can also end in a draw if both ships sink or neither side wins by 6 p.m.

A player loses if their crew falls below one quarter of its original size, or if enemy boarders capture the ship under the specified boarding conditions. Broadsides supports two-player games and battles against the computer.
