Psychological horror across two millennia
The briefing
Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem is a psychological horror action-adventure game released for Nintendo GameCube in 2002. Its story follows twelve characters across two millennia and locations including Ancient Rome, Persia, the Middle East, and modern-day Rhode Island as they confront ancient forces of evil.
Combat features weapons suited to each era, ranging from gladii and bastard swords to flintlock pistols and shotguns. A rune-based magic system lets players create spells for attacking enemies, dispelling illusions, and healing characters or items.
When enemies see a character, their Sanity meter decreases. As Sanity falls, unsettling hallucinations can occur, including bleeding walls, unexplained whispers, and a disoriented camera. Sanity can be restored through finishing moves, spells, or certain items.
