PlayStation State of Play September 2026: Final Fantasy VII Revelation, Metro 2039 and Every Major Announcement

A packed PlayStation presentation brought release dates, surprise sequels, Japan-focused reveals, GTA 6 controllers and a long-awaited look at the conclusion to Final Fantasy VII's remake trilogy.

PlayStation State of Play September 2026: Final Fantasy VII Revelation, Metro 2039 and Every Major Announcement

PlayStation's September 2026 State of Play paired a broad main showcase with a dedicated State of Play Japan segment, delivering a mix of release dates, new game announcements, expansion news, hardware, film footage and updates on games already on the horizon. Square Enix's Final Fantasy VII Revelation closed the primary presentation with a substantial gameplay showing and a firm launch date, while other major moments included the surprise reveal of Maneater 2, the first PS5 Pro gameplay for Metro 2039, and new details on Until Dawn 2.

The event also had notable absences. Several PlayStation Studios projects that fans were hoping to see did not appear, including Naughty Dog's Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, Sony Santa Monica's upcoming God of War Laufey, and Haven Studio's Fairgame$. There were likewise no new updates from Media Molecule or Sony Bend. Those omissions did not prevent the show from covering a considerable amount of ground, especially once the Japan segment began.

Final Fantasy VII Revelation completes the remake trilogy in April 2027

The biggest announcement of the main State of Play was a closer look at Final Fantasy VII Revelation, the game positioned as the final chapter in Square Enix's Final Fantasy VII remake trilogy. The presentation included a new trailer followed by 10 minutes of gameplay, offering the most extensive look at the project shown during the broadcast.

Final Fantasy VII Revelation launches on April 8, 2027. Beyond confirming the date, the reveal served as a major statement of intent for the finale. The remake series has steadily expanded the scale and interpretation of the original Final Fantasy VII story, and Revelation now has the task of bringing that long-running project to a close. With a lengthy gameplay segment rather than a brief cinematic tease, Square Enix clearly used the showcase to underline how central the game will be to PlayStation's 2027 lineup.

Metro 2039 and Until Dawn 2 receive release dates

4A Games used the event to reveal Metro 2039 gameplay running on PS5 Pro. The footage emphasized the series' familiar blend of oppressive interiors, human threats, harsh weather and carefully lit post-apocalyptic environments. The featured sequence followed the protagonist through a building as combat escalated before moving outside into an approaching storm.

Metro 2039 is scheduled for February 4, 2027. It was one of the more visually focused presentations of the event, with the PS5 Pro footage highlighting detailed environments and atmospheric lighting. The new game will continue the Metro franchise's move into a new era following the previous entries' journeys through a hostile, ruined world.

Firesprite also returned with a new trailer for Until Dawn 2. The sequel's presentation concentrated on its cast and highly detailed facial animation, with its characters placed in distinctly uncomfortable and frightening situations. Until Dawn 2 arrives exclusively on PS5 on January 26, 2027. The date places it just ahead of Metro 2039 in what is shaping up to be a particularly busy opening stretch for PlayStation players next year.

Maneater 2, Crimson Desert DLC and a Monster Hunter Wilds expansion

Among the show's less expected announcements was Maneater 2, a sequel to the shark action game. Few details were provided beyond the reveal and its planned 2027 release window, but the announcement alone makes the return of the series one of the showcase's notable surprises.

Pearl Abyss brought new content for Crimson Desert, announcing downloadable content titled Chartering the Unknown. Its trailer suggested a wide-ranging set of additions, including underwater exploration and what appeared to be a base-building system. The game has already attracted attention for the sheer number of mechanics included in its open-world action framework, and this DLC looks set to push that variety further. Chartering the Unknown launches October 15, 2026.

Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance was another major expansion on display. The main State of Play introduced the expansion as a 2027 release, while the State of Play Japan follow-up went deeper with Monster Hunter producer Ryozo Tsujimoto. That segment revealed additional creatures, including a new Elder Dragon called Gundoraga. More information about that monster is expected later, but Ascendance already appears intended as a substantial new chapter for Wilds.

Ghost of Yotei, Marvel's Wolverine and Saros updates

Sucker Punch showed Ghost of Yotei Most Wanted, a single-player combat-survival roguelike mode included in the Ghost of Yotei Complete Edition. Both the Complete Edition and the mode launch on October 1, 2026 for PS5. The footage ended with an especially meaningful reveal for fans of the earlier game: Jin Sakai, protagonist of Ghost of Tsushima, will be playable through Most Wanted.

The Japan showcase continued that focus with Ghost of Yotei: Echoes of Sekigahara, a story expansion also arriving October 1 as part of the Complete Edition. The expansion gives Ghost of Yotei a substantial presence across both halves of the evening's programming, combining a story addition with a separate replayable combat-survival experience.

PlayStation also released another trailer for Marvel's Wolverine, still set to launch exclusively on PS5 later this month. Wolverine battles Trask's Sentinels in the footage, and the trailer also shows co-op gameplay involving Sabretooth. The action builds toward a confrontation with a huge Sentinel as the heroes pursue Trask.

Housemarque's Saros was confirmed to be receiving a free update called Zenith. Meanwhile, Gran Turismo 7 is getting its Spec IV Update before the end of 2026. Creator Kazunori Yamauchi said the update will arrive in two stages, planned for October and December.

Konami, indies and PlayStation Plus

Konami had a strong presence across the combined presentations. Rhapsody in Scarlet is an action game set in 1920s New York starring a mage named Ellie. Its combat lets her incorporate magic into fast combo strings, while Beast abilities offer another layer to the action. A story trailer also pointed to the dangerous consequences of magic and a connection to a mysterious mafia. The Japan segment expanded on the initial reveal with additional gameplay.

Rev. Noir, an upcoming Konami RPG shown running on PS5 Pro, is due in 2027. The company also highlighted both games during the Japan-focused broadcast, making them two of its most visible new projects of the event.

Three more independent games were introduced for PlayStation: Hunter's Moon, Uncanyon, and Double Fine's Keeper. Keeper was available on PS5 immediately following the presentation, marking its arrival after Double Fine's return to independence from Microsoft ownership.

Square Enix announced that a demo for Final Fantasy Resonance is available now, ahead of the game's October launch. Elsewhere, Gundam Rogue Orbit received a March 5, 2027 release date and a look at customization options in the Japanese segment.

PlayStation Plus subscribers can expect several classics across the rest of 2026. Mega Man X: Command Mission, Dino Crisis 2 and the original Ratchet & Clank are joining the Classics Catalog. Mycopunk is also headed to the Game Catalog. Dino Crisis 2 stands out in particular given continued enthusiasm for a completely new entry in Capcom's survival-horror series.

State of Play Japan adds Dragon Ball, Fate and more

The State of Play Japan presentation featured its own substantial slate. Dragon Ball Xenoverse 3 is planned for 2027, while Fate/Extra Record is coming to PS5 and PS4 on January 28, 2027. The Eminence in Shadow: Phantom Echoes received its first trailer, and Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World appeared with a new look at its world and antagonists.

Other announcements included the dark fantasy tactical action game Conq: Crown of No Quarter, scheduled for 2027; Streetlamp Studio's cyberpunk side-scrolling roguelike SlashZero, due in spring 2027; and zombie action game Stupid Never Dies, whose demo covers its first two hours and supports save transfers.

Cygames revealed its smaller-scale CygamesEdge initiative and its first game, Where the Seeds Fall. The action-adventure game is built around vertical movement and the challenge of reaching the ground from a tremendous height. It launches November 5, 2026. PlayStation's China Hero Project also spotlighted Daba: Land of Water Scar, a soulslike about a humanoid-looking puppet exploring an ancient city.

Finally, football game Rematch will collaborate with anime series Blue Lock beginning September 24. Yoichi Isagi, Meguru Bachira, Seishiro Nagi and Rin Itoshi are among the crossover's included characters.

GTA 6 DualSense controllers, LEGO PlayStation and Resident Evil film footage

Two limited-edition GTA 6 DualSense controllers were confirmed: the Grand Theft Auto VI Black Limited Edition and Grand Theft Auto VI White Limited Edition. Both launch on November 19 for $84.99 USD, ¥12,480 including tax, EUR84.99, or £74.99. Pre-orders begin September 10 at 10 a.m. local time.

PlayStation also officially unveiled its LEGO recreation of the original 1994 PS1. The nearly 1:1-scale set contains 1,911 pieces and is due later in 2026.

The presentation opened with a new clip from Zach Cregger's Resident Evil movie, featuring Austin Abrams attempting to escape as zombies fall from rooftops into the street. The film reaches theaters on September 18, 2026.

With Final Fantasy VII Revelation leading the way, an unusually large number of dated projects, and a Japan segment filled with additional announcements, September's State of Play provided a detailed snapshot of PlayStation's near future. Even so, the unanswered questions around absent PlayStation Studios projects ensure that fans will be watching closely for the company's next major showcase.
