Escape From Playtime, a new co-op survival horror extraction game set in the world of Poppy Playtime, is now available in Steam Early Access for PC. Developed by Mob Entertainment, the game takes the series in a multiplayer-focused direction while retaining the unnerving factory setting, dangerous toys, environmental puzzles, and lore-heavy mystery that define its universe.

Rather than placing players in the shoes of the original game's former Playtime Co. employee, Escape From Playtime makes the Smiling Critters the central playable cast. It supports one to eight players, allowing groups to enter the factory together, take on assignments, gather supplies, avoid hostile threats, and attempt to get out alive. Solo play is also supported for players looking for a more isolated survival-horror experience.

The Early Access launch arrives with all eight Smiling Critters in the game. Four are immediately available, while the other four can be unlocked through progression. The title is listed at $9.99 USD, with a limited-time 10% launch discount. Players who own the free-to-play Poppy Playtime: Chapter 1 can receive an additional 10% discount.

A Canonical Story Set Between Major Poppy Playtime Events

Escape From Playtime is positioned as a canonical part of the wider Poppy Playtime timeline. Its story occurs after the notorious Hour of Joy and before the beginning of Poppy Playtime: Chapter 1. That placement gives the new game room to explore an era of Playtime Co. and its factory that has not previously been covered in depth.

Players control the Smiling Critters as they navigate this unexplored section of the facility. Their objective is not simply to survive each encounter, but to scavenge resources, fulfill dangerous tasks, and uncover hidden truths about their circumstances. Overseeing those activities is a mysterious figure known as the Voice, which directs the group through assignments while offering the possibility of freedom and a new sanctuary.

That promise creates an immediate question at the heart of the game: is the Voice a guide, a manipulator, or something more complicated? The setting and time period suggest that players can expect story details tied to the factory's past, the aftermath of the Hour of Joy, and the fate of characters caught within Playtime Co.'s increasingly sinister operations.

Extraction Horror Built Around Teamwork and Risk

The core loop blends several survival-horror staples with extraction-style decision-making. Each run asks players to explore, collect what they need, complete objectives, and escape while threats roam the factory. Success depends on more than finding a safe route; teams will have to manage supplies, make use of their surroundings, and decide how much danger they are willing to face before attempting an exit.

Scavenging is a major part of survival. Players search for tools and clues that can help them handle puzzles or open up new paths. The factory is not designed as a straightforward corridor from one objective to the next, either. Hiding places, side routes, and ways to create distractions all factor into a group's plans.

That structure should create different roles naturally during a match. One player may look for resources while another watches for danger. A group can remain together for safety, though doing so may slow down its ability to cover ground. Splitting up can make an assignment more efficient, but it leaves individual Smiling Critters exposed if a threat appears or a teammate needs help.

Stealth and evasion are therefore as important as collecting items. The game emphasizes knowing when to stay out of sight, when to lure danger away from an objective, and when a quick retreat is the only sensible option. Those choices fit the series' horror identity while making cooperation an active part of gameplay rather than merely a way to put more players into the same map.

Proximity Chat Brings Player Communication Into the Horror

One of the more notable multiplayer features is proximity voice chat. Players can communicate with one another, but how clearly they can hear a teammate depends on where everyone is positioned. A squad that separates across the factory may lose the easy coordination available when standing close together.

In a game built around stealth and unpredictable danger, that limitation can turn basic communication into another source of pressure. Calling for help may not reach the rest of the team. Players may need to choose between staying close enough to coordinate and spreading out to finish tasks. The feature also gives tense moments a more immediate quality, as a teammate's voice can fade while they move farther down a hallway or disappear around a corner.

For groups that enjoy co-op horror, proximity chat can make extraction runs feel less controlled than conventional lobby-based multiplayer. It asks players to react to what they can see and hear in the moment, rather than relying entirely on constant team-wide callouts.

Mini Mode Changes the View of Familiar Locations

Escape From Playtime also includes a Mini Mode that puts the scale of the factory into sharper perspective. In this mode, players experience iconic areas from the smaller viewpoint of a Smiling Critter. Spaces that might seem navigable at normal scale can become imposing environments when seen from much closer to the floor.

This smaller perspective is more than a visual gimmick. It can change how players approach navigation, hiding, and escape. A familiar room may have new routes, obstacles, or areas of cover when the player character is significantly smaller. It also reinforces the vulnerability of the Smiling Critters within a factory full of oversized machinery, abandoned play spaces, and looming threats.

The game's locations will not remain entirely static between attempts. The Voice can alter the layout of the factory, supporting procedurally changing runs. That means a successful strategy in one session may not translate directly to the next, since paths, conditions, and the structure of an assignment can shift.

Procedural variation is especially important for an extraction game, where repeat runs are central to progression. Changing layouts can keep players from treating each mission as a memorized route and may push them to adapt their plans around the resources, threats, and options available in a given attempt.

The Perm-A-Lounge Tracks Progress and Rewards

Outside active runs, players can use the Playtime Web Portal, also called the Perm-A-Lounge. This hub is intended to track progress and rewards, giving the Early Access game a place for players to monitor their advancement between expeditions.

The portal fits the Playtime Co. presentation of the franchise, turning a progression feature into another piece of the setting's corporate-fiction style. As the game grows, it may become an important place for players to check unlocks and see the results of their time spent completing assignments and surviving factory runs.

At launch, the character roster is a key part of that progression. While all eight Smiling Critters are included, only half begin unlocked. Earning access to the remaining four gives players a clear early goal, while the full cast provides a recognizable connection to the broader Poppy Playtime universe.

Founders' Pack Available Free for the First 30 Days

To mark the start of Early Access, Mob Entertainment is offering a Founders' Pack at no additional cost for the first 30 days. The pack includes exclusive alternate looks for all eight Smiling Critters along with additional rewards.

Because the offer is tied to the opening month, players interested in the cosmetic variants will need to claim the pack during that initial window. It is a launch incentive rather than a separate edition of the game, and it gives early players a way to personalize the full Critter lineup as they unlock and use it.

Early Access Plans Extend Into 2027

The Steam debut is only the beginning of the project's planned development. Mob Entertainment intends to support Escape From Playtime through the rest of 2026 and into 2027. Planned additions include new factory areas, enemies, items, cosmetics, and gameplay features.

The roadmap is expected to evolve with community feedback, which is particularly relevant for a cooperative extraction game. Balancing a one-to-eight-player experience, making procedural runs consistently engaging, and ensuring that solo players remain supported are all areas where Early Access feedback can have a substantial impact.

For the Poppy Playtime franchise, the release represents a substantial expansion in format. The earlier games are known for their single-player puzzle-horror structure, while Escape From Playtime turns the factory into a shared survival space where planning, proximity, and teamwork can be just as important as solving the next puzzle.

Players can now enter the factory on PC through Steam Early Access, either alone or with a full group of eight Smiling Critters. With its story set in a previously unexplored stretch of the timeline, changing runs, and continued updates planned beyond launch, Escape From Playtime is designed to make repeat visits to Playtime Co. increasingly unpredictable.
