Grand Theft Auto 6 is shaping up to be Rockstar Games' most ambitious open world yet, with a newly detailed look at the fictional state of Leonida outlining an enormous range of systems, activities and environmental detail. The game's version of Florida will not simply be a bigger backdrop for crime stories: Rockstar is emphasizing density, regional identity, reactive weather, varied wildlife and choices that affect both its central relationship and the wider narrative.

Jason and Lucia will be at the center of the experience, but the world around them appears designed to be just as important. From hurricanes rolling across the state to shared ride-hailing trips, animal tracking, high-security car thefts and a lengthy list of diversions, GTA 6 is aiming to make every corner of Leonida feel more distinct and more alive than previous Rockstar worlds.

Leonida is twice the size of GTA 5's map

Rockstar North co-studio head Aaron Garbut has said GTA 6's map is approximately twice the size of the world in Grand Theft Auto 5. Raw landmass is not the only goal, however. The studio is placing particular weight on how much exists within that space, including rooftops, back alleys and building interiors.

That focus could be especially significant after years of player interest in accessible interiors and believable urban spaces. Garbut described a development approach that sought a point where the number of interiors makes buildings feel convincing inside and outside, rather than appearing as largely decorative structures. It is an ambitious promise, though the exact number of enterable locations has not been disclosed.

Leonida will be divided into six regions: Vice City, Leonida Keys, Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia, and Mount Kalaga National Park. Vice City is the best-known name, having appeared in 2002's GTA: Vice City, while the other locations suggest a mix of coastal, wetland, industrial, rural and wilderness environments.

The story is also intended to move players through these contrasting places instead of leaving the map's more distant areas entirely to optional exploration. Rockstar wants the main path to highlight the divide between wealthier communities and poorer parts of the state, although it will not necessarily take players through every location or activity available.

Ambrosia, for example, is presented as a rural industrial territory of factories and refineries. It is controlled by a biker gang that appears separate from the Lost MC, the returning group seen in both GTA 4 and GTA 5. That suggests Leonida's regions may come with their own local power structures and dangers, rather than serving as simple geographic checkpoints.

Hurricanes and persistent local weather should change the mood of the world

One of the biggest environmental confirmations is the inclusion of hurricanes. A Florida-inspired setting would have felt incomplete without them, but their implementation raises obvious technical and design questions. Rockstar has confirmed that hurricanes will occur, while keeping details about their frequency and any possible story impact under wraps.

When they arrive, players can expect heavy cloud cover, powerful winds, intense rain, thunder and dramatic lightning. Water will visibly pour from roof edges and lampposts, helping make the aftermath as tangible as the storm itself. The goal appears to be weather that alters the character of familiar streets rather than functioning as a brief visual effect.

Rockstar vice president of art for lighting and rendering Owen Shepherd said the weather technology was rebuilt for GTA 6 to support conditions that are localized, dynamic and persistent. In practical terms, a player may stand in bright sunshine while seeing a rainstorm farther away. Puddles, rainbows and other evidence of earlier conditions should remain in the environment, allowing players to notice that a location has recently been soaked even if they were elsewhere when the rain began.

Wind will have its own visible role, making water ripple, moving hair and sweeping debris through the world. Taken together, those details suggest Leonida's atmosphere will have a more continuous presence, particularly across its coastlines, wetlands and exposed urban districts.

More than 170 animal species inhabit land, sea and wetlands

Wildlife is another major part of that environmental push. GTA 6 will include over 170 animal species, including more than 60 types of birds, over 30 land mammals, plus fish and reptiles. Rockstar vice president of dynamic art Michael Kane said the team wanted to represent the real diversity of Florida's ecosystem across urban areas, rural terrain, inland waters, the ocean, swamps and Everglades-like habitats.

The animal list includes several kinds of sharks, alongside jellyfish, whales, turtles and rays. These marine creatures will have distinct movement patterns and can be encountered while scuba diving. That is notable because it gives the game's underwater spaces a more deliberate ecological identity than a handful of isolated sea-life encounters.

Players will also be able to track animals in a manner reminiscent of Red Dead Redemption 2, and Rockstar has confirmed the presence of rare variants. It has not said what those rare animals are or how they will be used. A screenshot showing Jason approaching deer with a rifle strongly indicates that hunting is returning, though its full structure remains unconfirmed. Hunting existed in GTA 5 but had a relatively limited role compared with its much deeper treatment in Red Dead Redemption 2.

Dogs can be petted, as seen in the extended gameplay reveal shown in August. Whether that interaction will extend to other domestic animals has not been confirmed.

Ride sharing, doomscrolling and a long list of diversions

Fast travel will come through ride-share vehicles. Rather than simply fading from one point to another, Jason and Lucia can ride with other passengers, creating opportunities for unique conversations during the trip. Players who would rather tune out can browse Snapmatic, GTA's social-media parody, while traveling.

There is one important limitation: players cannot make posts of their own. Jason and Lucia are on the run, and being visibly active online would create risks for them. The choice fits GTA's longstanding interest in satirizing modern culture while also grounding a feature in the protagonists' circumstances.

Beyond missions, players can spend time base jumping, playing billiards, working out at gyms, kayaking, trying mini golf, scuba diving, street racing, off-road racing, visiting zoos, air boating and jet skiing. The list does not explain how robust every activity will be, but it signals a world built to support more than criminal jobs and story missions.

Robberies and car thefts carry greater consequences

Robberies will offer multiple approaches. Players can act alone or as a pair, choose stealth or aggression, and face differing levels of law-enforcement response based on their decisions. When the police arrive, Jason and Lucia can attempt to escape together or split up, potentially forcing one character to absorb more of the pursuit. However, either protagonist becoming overwhelmed results in failure.

Carjacking is also being expanded. Premium vehicles may need specialized tools before they can be stolen, and successfully taking one may only be the beginning. Trackers and security systems can create fresh complications after the theft.

An in-game app called WAiNK will show a vehicle's resale value, security details and the cost of converting it into a personal vehicle. Stolen cars that players do not keep can be moved through a fence. These systems suggest that vehicle theft may involve more planning and follow-through than simply grabbing the nearest fast car.

Jason and Lucia's bond can change with the player

The relationship between GTA 6's two protagonists is not locked into a single romantic path. Players can influence whether Jason and Lucia become more than platonic partners by taking them on dates, responding to calls and messages, opening doors, holding hands and otherwise investing in the relationship.

Those choices connect to a larger branching-story structure. Rockstar has said that both major and minor decisions can alter the narrative, encouraging repeat playthroughs to discover different threads. The extent of those branches has not been detailed, so it remains unclear whether they will produce dramatically different endings, mission outcomes, character dynamics, or a combination of all three.

NPC variety and fashion are part of Leonida's social texture

Rockstar is also promising its most varied collection of non-player characters and clothing to date. NPCs will differ in height, weight, skin type and physical features, including tans and moles. The studio has even emphasized variation in body shape, an unusually granular detail that supports its broader attempt to make crowded areas feel less repetitive.

Clothing is meant to reflect both location and circumstance. Characters in struggling neighborhoods may wear dirtier or more weathered garments, while fashion, branding, material quality, footwear, watches, sunglasses and hats will be connected to local culture and social context. Players will likewise have a major wardrobe selection to spend their criminal earnings on.

Garbut has acknowledged the immense expectations surrounding GTA 6 and said Rockstar's answer has been to try to exceed them, increasing scale, detail, interaction, density and breadth at once. That is a formidable target. Still, the newly revealed features paint a clear picture: GTA 6 is not merely returning to Vice City. It is attempting to turn Leonida into a reactive state where weather, wildlife, style, travel, crime and relationships all contribute to the feeling of a living place.
