Torchlight: Infinite will begin its SS14 season, Tartarus, on October 15, introducing a prison-themed seasonal activity that mixes enemy hunting, roster management, and a final multi-level combat test. The update also brings a new Hero Trait for Youga, a follower-based progression system, additional skills, Pactspirits, cosmetics, and audiovisual refinements.

Tartarus is scheduled to go live at 7:00pm PDT and 10:00pm EDT on October 15. For players in the UK and Central Europe, that converts to 3:00am BST and 4:00am CEST respectively on October 16. The season will be available across the action RPG's existing PC, iOS, and Android versions.

A Three-Phase Descent Into Tartarus

The headline feature of SS14 is its new Tartarus mode. Rather than presenting players with a straightforward series of battles, the activity is structured around three distinct stages. Each section has its own goal, and the early choices made while assembling a prison population ultimately shape the final combat encounter.

The opening phase asks players to pursue escaped prisoners and defeat them. Doing so earns the nameplates needed for the next part of the activity. This establishes the pool of inmates that players can bring into the central management layer of Tartarus, making the first stage more than a simple warm-up fight.

Once those prisoners have been found, the mode moves to a circular prison arrangement containing 16 cells. Players will place inmates in those cells and oversee clashes between prisoners. Inmates can also be pitted against beasts, with the available creature types including elephants, lions, wolves, and rats.

These staged conflicts are designed to develop the prisoners' capabilities before the mode reaches its conclusion. The prison layout and the matchups within it therefore become part of the seasonal decision-making: building up an effective roster should matter when the inmates cease to be assets and become the opposition.

After 20 turns of this construction and management process, Tartarus enters its third phase. The assembled inmate roster transforms into enemies and bosses for the player to confront. This combat challenge spans three prison levels and offers six difficulty tiers. Rewards are tied to both the number of enemies defeated and the quality of the foes overcome, putting an emphasis on how successfully players prepared the roster during the previous stages.

The result is a seasonal loop that blends the usual fast-paced combat foundation of Torchlight: Infinite with a more deliberate preparation layer. Hunting prisoners, choosing how to house and train them, and then fighting the consequences of those decisions should give Tartarus a different rhythm from content focused solely on clearing encounters as quickly as possible.

Spacetime Witness Youga Joins the Hero Trait Lineup

SS14 also expands Youga's options with the new Spacetime Witness Hero Trait. Its identity is built around maintaining spellcasting momentum, with tools intended to support a continuous-casting playstyle rather than waiting through lengthy gaps between major abilities.

A central component is Youga's Clockwork Core, which can automatically cast Entanglement skills. Critical strikes can also reduce ability cooldowns, creating an incentive to keep pressure on enemies and sustain the trait's spell-driven flow. The trait offers three development routes, and players can either lean heavily into one branch or combine elements from multiple paths.

Spacetime Dictator

Spacetime Dictator focuses on projectile gameplay and time manipulation. This path will be the natural point of interest for players looking to build around ranged spell delivery while using temporal effects as part of their combat plan.

Spacetime Conqueror

Spacetime Conqueror puts greater weight on movement and linked damage through Time-Rift Traversal. Its design suggests a more mobile approach, rewarding players who want their positioning and traversal mechanics to contribute directly to their damage patterns.

Spacetime Dominator

Spacetime Dominator centers on strengthening spells through Spacetime Overload. This branch is aimed at building up spell enhancements, offering another avenue for players who prefer to concentrate on escalating the power of their casting tools.

With the ability to specialize or mix the three directions, Spacetime Witness Youga is intended to accommodate several takes on the same core idea. Players may opt for a focused projectile and time-control setup, prioritize mobility, invest in spell enhancement, or look for interactions between those systems. As with the game's broader buildcraft, the practical results will depend on how the trait's tools are paired with equipment, skills, and other progression choices.

Followers Add Another Build Customization Layer

The Tartarus season introduces a separate progression system based on recruitable followers. Players can bring followers into their collection from four tribes: wolves, rats, lions, and elephants. Recruitment uses a new resource called Letters of Introduction.

Followers provide additional build customization through Active and Support Skills. Their effects can supply buffs, protection, or debuff support, allowing them to complement a character's strengths or address weaknesses in a setup. That means the system is positioned as more than a cosmetic companion feature; it is another mechanical decision point for players refining a build.

Higher Netherrealm difficulty tiers unlock access to higher-tier followers. This connects follower progression to advancement through the game's more demanding content and gives players further incentives to push into tougher tiers. The exact follower combinations and their role in the broader seasonal meta will become clearer once the season is live and players begin testing the available skill interactions.

More Skills, Pactspirits, Cosmetics, and Presentation Updates

Beyond Tartarus, Youga's new trait, and the follower system, SS14 includes more seasonal additions. The update will add new skills, character cosmetics, and Pactspirits, while also delivering audio and visual improvements. These changes broaden the season beyond its central prison challenge and create new options for players who spend each season experimenting with fresh character concepts.

For returning players, the major question will be how Tartarus fits into the larger progression loop. The mode's final rewards are based on the quality and quantity of defeated enemies, while the prison-building phase determines the threats that await at the end. That structure could make planning and risk assessment as important as combat execution, particularly when advancing through the six available difficulty levels.

The follower system similarly has potential to influence how builds are assembled throughout the season. Since followers offer buffs, defensive assistance, and support for debuffs, they may create room for combinations that would otherwise require sacrifices in a player's own skill selection. Meanwhile, Spacetime Witness Youga gives fans of the hero a new reason to revisit spell-focused gameplay built around critical hits, cooldown reduction, automatic Entanglement casts, movement, projectiles, or enhanced spells.

Torchlight: Infinite SS14 Tartarus launches October 15 at 7:00pm PDT / 10:00pm EDT, or October 16 at 3:00am BST / 4:00am CEST. The free-to-play action RPG is available on PC as well as iOS and Android devices.
