Arc Raiders is enjoying its most significant Steam resurgence in months following the arrival of its Frozen Trail 2.0 update. The new content landed on October 8 for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S, bringing a snowy map, new enemies, traversal tools, progression changes, and a free weekend that runs through October 12. The result is a sharp rise in attention for Embark's extraction shooter, with Steam concurrency reaching 166,670 players at the time the figure was reported.

That is the game's highest Steam player total since early April, marking a seven-month high. The comeback is especially notable given Arc Raiders' quieter period over recent months. After an all-time Steam peak of almost 500,000 concurrent players, the game had generally struggled to rise beyond 35,000 PC players from July onward. Its September low was around 10,000 concurrent players on Steam.

Frozen Trail has not yet proven whether it can create a permanent second wave for Arc Raiders, but the immediate response shows that a substantial update can still bring a large segment of the community back to Speranza. It is also the first major jump in player interest since December 2025, following a period in which players had waited for Embark to revisit systems such as the divisive Expedition prestige structure and deliver more ambitious new content.

Pendola Pass gives Raiders a huge new destination

The centerpiece of Frozen Trail is Pendola Pass, a snowy mountainous map situated beyond the Rust Belt areas players know from the base experience. Its arrival is Arc Raiders' first substantial content addition since the Riven Tides update in April, and community reactions have repeatedly focused on both its scope and density.

Players have highlighted the number of places to explore, loot, and fight through, with one returning player saying they could not investigate more than a small portion of the map during a short session. The map also introduces new conditions, including the Frigate, an imposing UFO-like ARC ship that has quickly become one of the update's most talked-about encounters. Players have compared getting aboard it to taking on a raid-style challenge, a fitting description for an extraction game where traversal, danger, and the decision to leave with valuable loot are closely connected.

Pendola Pass is not simply a larger space. It is also being used to test a Dynamic Loot Zone system. Specific areas can vary in loot value from one raid to the next, while retaining their established loot identity. In other words, a Residential zone remains Residential, but its rewards may be more or less valuable on a given run. The idea is to make predictable routes less dominant and encourage more adaptive scavenging.

Frozen Trail also improves the overall loot value on Riven Tides by approximately 15%, so the new map is not the only location affected by the update's broader economy and exploration work.

The Grappling Hook is becoming the update's breakout feature

Many major patches add weapons, balance adjustments, and cosmetic rewards. Frozen Trail has all of those, but the item capturing the most attention is the new Grappling Hook. Its appeal is straightforward: Raiders can use it to reach steep cliffs, rapidly reposition, and even attach themselves to flying ARC. That opens the door to dramatic escapes, risky approaches, and the kind of unexpected physics-driven moments that spread quickly in clips.

Players have naturally compared the movement to swinging around like Spider-Man. The comparison is less about turning Arc Raiders into a superhero game than about how liberating the new tool feels in a game previously defined by more grounded traversal. Combined with a new wall-running skill and the ability to scramble up steep slopes, the Grappling Hook gives returning players a fresh reason to rethink familiar combat spaces.

The update also adds the Tether Launcher, which can connect enemies to objects, as well as a Yank Grenade and the Mountaineer's Detector. These tools expand the sandbox in a different direction, rewarding creative use of the environment rather than only direct gunfire. New Basic and Advanced Cameras add a social element too, allowing players to capture scenes from their raids. Given Arc Raiders' history of emergent comedy and chaotic encounters, an in-game camera is likely to produce plenty of memorable player-made moments.

New threats, weapons, and a deeper progression overhaul

Traversal is only one part of Frozen Trail. The update introduces three new ARC enemies: the Bully, Skulker, and Hydra. Alongside the Frigate, these threats give players more to learn as they explore Pendola Pass. Embark has also made several combat-oriented changes, including revisions to explosive damage against ARC armor and weak points, plus adjustments intended to improve enemy awareness and attack behavior.

Two new weapons, the Bantam and Stiletto, join the arsenal, while Amplified Weapons are now part of the game's expanded upgrade landscape. The Anvil has moved from Green rarity to Blue rarity because of its effectiveness against both Raiders and ARC, while the Bantam takes its place as the uncommon hand cannon. The Heavy Shield has also received a durability improvement and a reduced movement penalty.

Perhaps the most consequential long-term change is the revamped Skill Tree. Embark has reworked underperforming skills, rearranged the layout, and placed more emphasis on mutually exclusive choices. Mid-branch progression now asks players to choose between two skills, while the ends of branches offer three options from which players can select up to two after investing enough points. The intent is to make builds more meaningful and allow players to better define their preferred style.

The developer has acknowledged that this is a major reimagining of the system and expects more tuning after players spend time with the revised tree. That flexibility will matter, because skill choices, mobility tools, and the new map all arrive at once, giving the player base a lot of fresh interactions to test.

Outposts and Reward Passes reshape the between-raid game

Frozen Trail adds an Outpost that can be unlocked through a project and expanded with modules. A new Research Bench is connected to the feature, while Furniture Designs let players craft decorative items for their personal space. The update includes 100 Furniture Designs in total, with many found Topside and others tied to Outpost upgrades or pass rewards.

Progression has changed elsewhere as well. Raider Decks have evolved into the new Reward Pass system, beginning with the 60-level Frozen Trail Pass. It contains Free and Premium tracks. Existing Raider Decks remain available through a Legacy Pass, and previously earned rewards are retained. The former Cred currency has been removed and replaced by Reward Points, which advance whichever pass is active.

Feats have been divided into Easy, Medium, and Hard categories, with escalating Reward Point payouts and weekly milestone progress. Quest completion now grants XP, and 22 new quests have been added. These may seem like supporting changes beside Pendola Pass and the Grappling Hook, but they are important for players looking for reasons to stay engaged after the initial novelty of the new map fades.

A free weekend and discount lower the barrier to return

The timing of the update has amplified its impact. Arc Raiders is hosting a free weekend from October 8 through October 12, offering newcomers and lapsed players a chance to see the changes without an upfront commitment. The game is also discounted by 50% across platforms during this period.

Those conditions help explain why the Steam number has risen so quickly, but they do not fully account for the enthusiastic reaction. Returning players have praised the scale of Pendola Pass, the quantity of new equipment, the Frigate encounter, weapon and skill additions, and the update's broader ambition. One widely shared community response described Frozen Trail as an exceptional update and admitted that its author had been too pessimistic about the game's future after stepping away.

Not every returning player will stay, and the current peak remains far below Arc Raiders' launch-era high. Still, Frozen Trail appears to have given Embark a strong foundation for rebuilding momentum. The studio is also preparing to test a dedicated PvE mode, a feature players have requested since launch. That future test could be another important moment for a game that has repeatedly sparked debate over the balance between cooperative play, extraction tension, and player-versus-player encounters.

There are still known issues in the new update, including some Pendola Pass clipping and collision problems, occasional weapon mesh visibility glitches, and several Outpost-related bugs. Embark has stated that fixes for a number of these issues are already planned for future live updates. For now, though, the conversation is centered on the new tools and the renewed energy around the game. Arc Raiders has found a compelling way to bring its community back into the field: give them a mountain to explore, strange new machines to fight, and a Grappling Hook to turn every escape into a potential highlight reel.
