The Flaming Mane is one of the most important progression tools in Phantom Blade Zero. While it is a weapon in its own right, its defining feature is the ability to burn away bramble branches that seal off routes throughout the world. Some of those overgrown barriers conceal optional rewards, but others prevent access to substantial new areas and even mission-critical paths.

There is one major catch: players will not obtain the Flaming Mane early. The Red Serpent House in the Crimson Forest is among the first places where its bramble-clearing ability becomes relevant, yet the required Phantom Edge is only acquired much later, after reaching the game's fourth region, Pangzhen. Fortunately, the process is direct once that region is available. It is tied to the main story and does not require tracking down a hidden item through obscure side content.

Here is the complete route to getting the dormant Flaming Mane, repairing it, and putting its fire to use across Pangzhen and earlier regions.

When You Can Get the Flaming Mane

The first requirement is simply progressing far enough through the campaign to reach Pangzhen, the fourth region. This means players who spot bramble barriers in the Crimson Forest should not expect to clear them immediately. Those blocked routes are designed to be revisited once the appropriate tool has been recovered and restored.

After arriving in Pangzhen, continue following the main quest until reaching the town's Backstreets. The relevant objective begins with the quest called "The Heart's Trail." From there, the Flaming Mane's acquisition path unfolds through a visit to Yu'er's house, a confrontation near the Lion Dance Hall, and a boss encounter deep inside that location.

Because the entire sequence is part of the main route, the biggest obstacle is campaign progress rather than difficult exploration. Still, a single dialogue detail is important, so it is worth taking the following steps in order.

Step 1: Visit Yu'er's House During "The Heart's Trail"

While pursuing "The Heart's Trail" through Pangzhen's Backstreets, make your way to Yu'er's house. The route passes the Lion Dance Hall, an important landmark for the next part of the quest. The visit to Yu'er's home also overlaps with the events connected to the Flesh Lily quest, making it a useful stop for players advancing multiple objectives in this section of the story.

Inside the house, speak with Yu'er's father and make sure to exhaust all of his dialogue before leaving. Do not rush through the conversation or walk out after only one exchange. Hearing everything he has to say is necessary for the chain of events that leads to the Lion Dance Hall key.

Once the conversation is complete, leave the house. A group of smaller enemies, the Lion Dancer Disciples, will be waiting outside. Defeat them to receive the Heavy Lion Hall Gate Key.

Step 2: Use the Heavy Lion Hall Gate Key

With the key in hand, return to the Lion Dance Hall. There is a Bell immediately outside the building, so returning should be quick if you have activated it and want to fast travel rather than retrace the streets on foot.

Use the Heavy Lion Hall Gate Key to open the entrance and begin moving through the interior. The hall is not just a brief detour: it leads to the fight that awards the Flaming Mane. Continue through the building, clearing enemies and navigating the route until you ascend a set of stairs and arrive at the Lion Dance Hall Depths.

At that point, go through the gateway directly ahead. It leads into an arena, where the next major battle begins.

Step 3: Defeat Flame, the Mask-Bound Lion Dance Grandmaster

The first boss is Flame, The Mask-Bound Lion Dance Grandmaster. This encounter demands attention, but it is manageable with solid defensive play. The central advice is straightforward: parry often where possible, stay ready to evade, and make avoiding fire attacks a priority.

The Grandmaster's attacks can create pressure through flame and close-range aggression, so patience is more valuable than forcing damage. Look for reliable openings after defensive responses, rather than committing to long strings that could leave you exposed. Players comfortable with the game's parry timing should find opportunities to control the pace of the battle, while those less confident can emphasize dodging and safer counterattacks.

Winning the initial fight is not the end of the encounter. The boss transitions into a second phase called The Lion Dance Grandmaster's Final Dance.

How the Final Dance Phase Works

The second phase has a notably unusual mechanic. Instead of remaining in a conventional arena exchange, players must hop between poles while using a small cannon to fire at the boss. The shift can be surprising if you enter the battle expecting a normal second phase, so be prepared to adapt immediately after the first health bar is finished.

Prioritize stable movement from pole to pole and take the available cannon shots rather than trying to rush the sequence. The key is recognizing that the fight has temporarily changed its rules: positioning and traversal are now as important as damage. Complete the Final Dance phase to defeat the Grandmaster fully.

Your reward is the dormant Flaming Mane. It may look like the goal has been reached, but the item cannot burn brambles until it has been repaired.

Step 4: Repair the Flaming Mane at Jingyang Hall

After receiving the dormant weapon, fast travel to Jingyang Hall in southeastern Pangzhen. Open the gate leading to the hall, then approach the doorway. Doing so triggers a cutscene that introduces Lei Dang.

When the scene ends, speak with Lei Dang. Choose the dialogue option to repair the Flaming Mane. Lei Dang uses his Tiger Cannon on the weapon, somehow providing the power it needs. Once this short repair sequence is complete, the dormant version becomes the fully functional Flaming Mane.

This is the version that matters for exploration. With the repaired Phantom Edge equipped and available, bramble branches that previously acted as hard barriers can now be incinerated.

What the Flaming Mane Unlocks

The Flaming Mane is especially useful across Pangzhen, where numerous bramble-covered paths can now be opened. Not every barrier leads to the same kind of payoff. Some guard compact side spaces containing assorted rewards, while others block routes with much larger consequences for progression and exploration.

  • Optional reward areas: Certain bramble branches conceal smaller spaces containing useful pickups and other rewards.
  • Pangzhen slums: Burning the right growths can provide access to the town's slum areas.
  • Mirage Estate route: A mission-critical path toward the Mirage Estate is locked behind brambles.
  • Northeastern docks path: Another route heads northeast toward the docks and becomes accessible with the Flaming Mane.

Once the weapon has been repaired, it is worth taking a deliberate sweep through Pangzhen rather than only burning the first barrier on the active quest route. The tool is built to reward revisiting obvious dead ends. If a branch-covered path looked deliberate before, it is likely worth checking again now.

Where to Backtrack After Repairing It

Pangzhen is not the only place transformed by the Flaming Mane. The weapon also resolves barriers encountered much earlier in the adventure, making backtracking highly worthwhile.

First, return to the Crimson Forest and use the Flaming Mane at the Red Serpent House. This is an especially notable revisit because it is one of the earlier locations where players may have first noticed the need for a bramble-clearing tool. The delay between finding that obstruction and finally obtaining the answer is substantial, but the Flaming Mane is the intended solution.

You should also revisit the Village of Lu. There, the Flaming Mane opens access to the Black Serpent House. Together, these two locations make the case for a broader cleanup pass through previously explored regions. Earlier blocked branches are no longer merely scenery; they are invitations to return with a new capability.

Quick Flaming Mane Checklist

  1. Advance the main story until you reach Pangzhen, the fourth region.
  2. Continue to the Backstreets and begin "The Heart's Trail."
  3. Visit Yu'er's house and exhaust all of Yu'er's father's dialogue.
  4. Defeat the Lion Dancer Disciples outside to obtain the Heavy Lion Hall Gate Key.
  5. Return to the Lion Dance Hall and use the key.
  6. Reach the Lion Dance Hall Depths and enter the arena.
  7. Defeat Flame, The Mask-Bound Lion Dance Grandmaster, then finish The Lion Dance Grandmaster's Final Dance.
  8. Collect the dormant Flaming Mane.
  9. Travel to Jingyang Hall in southeastern Pangzhen.
  10. Meet Lei Dang and select the option to repair the weapon.
  11. Use the restored Flaming Mane to burn brambles in Pangzhen, the Crimson Forest, and the Village of Lu.

The most important thing to remember is that getting the Flaming Mane is a two-part process. Beating the Lion Dance Grandmaster only gives you the dormant form. The item becomes useful only after the follow-up visit to Lei Dang at Jingyang Hall. Once repaired, however, it becomes a major exploration upgrade, opening routes that have been waiting since much earlier in the game.
