DC used New York Comic Con 2026 to lay out an expansive slate of upcoming comics that stretches from Gotham City mysteries to cosmic Superman stories, horror-tinged westerns, mature-reader magic tales, and a major collision within the Absolute Universe. The announcements offered fresh details on established ongoing series while introducing a wave of books built around characters including Starfire, Vixen, Static, Etrigan, Swamp Thing, Jonah Hex, and Zatanna.
The biggest developments are split between DC's main continuity and its darker, reimagined Absolute Universe line. Batman will confront an especially personal mystery in the regular flagship title, while Absolute Justice will bring together the Absolute versions of Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman for the line's first large-scale crossover. Several announcements remain without firm dates, but the overall roadmap points toward a busy 2027.
Batman faces the reported assassination of Bruce Wayne
The central Batman series will begin a new storyline with Batman #15, scheduled for November 4. Writer Matt Fraction and artist Jorge Jiménez are continuing their run with a premise that immediately places the hero in an impossible position: Batman is investigating the assassination of Bruce Wayne.
That setup naturally raises major questions for Gotham and for Bruce's already complicated double life. Whether the event involves a body double, a public deception, a failed attempt, or something even stranger has not been clarified. Still, the story is being framed as a substantial turning point, and Batman #16, due in December, has been singled out as an important chapter.

DC also unveiled Batman - Shadow of the Bat, a new series from the team behind Absolute Martian Manhunter. Writer Deniz Camp explained that the book begins with an explosion at Ace Chemicals, the infamous location closely associated with The Killing Joke. The blast sends neuropharmacological agents into a Gotham neighborhood, prompting a quarantine. Batman enters the sealed-off area in an attempt to stop more Jokers from emerging.
That premise suggests a psychological and body-horror-inflected approach to the Dark Knight's world, particularly given the creative team's prior work. Batman - Shadow of the Bat is expected in early 2027.
Another newly announced title, Batman - Justice Year, will revisit Bruce Wayne's early interactions with the Justice League. Joshua Williamson is writing the series, with Bruno Redondo on art. The concept promises a younger Batman dealing with the difficulties of working alongside other heroes, likely before the relationships that define the modern Justice League have fully formed. A release date has not been announced, though an early 2027 arrival appears possible.
Superman receives new creative updates and specials
Batman was not the only cornerstone hero to receive attention. On the main Superman series, Xermánico will become the regular artist starting with issue #43. DC also confirmed that Tom King and Mitch Gerads are developing an unnamed Superman project, reuniting a creative partnership known for high-profile, formally ambitious superhero work.
Joshua Williamson and Dan Mora are also preparing a Superboy Prime special. Superboy Prime has long been one of DC's most volatile alternate-universe characters, capable of moving between tragic, nostalgic, and outright destructive roles. No story details or release window were provided, but the pairing of Williamson and Mora makes it one of the more notable Superman-adjacent projects currently in development.
Absolute Justice becomes the Absolute Universe's first major crossover
The largest Absolute Universe announcement was Absolute Justice, which will unite Absolute Batman, Absolute Superman, and Absolute Wonder Woman in the imprint's first major crossover event. Jason Aaron will write the series, and Juan Ferreyra will provide the artwork.
In this version of the DC mythos, Martian Manhunter J'onn J'onzz brings the heroes together against a corrupt counterpart to the Justice League. This hostile team consists of Joker, Dr. Elenore Thawne, Hector Hammond, and Veronica Cale. The lineup is an intriguing inversion of familiar heroic archetypes: each villain has longstanding connections to one or more of DC's greatest heroes, but here they are positioned as the powerful institutional force opposing the protagonists.
The crossover represents a major test for the Absolute Universe. The line has largely developed its characters through distinct solo books, using radically altered versions of familiar origins, relationships, and power structures. Absolute Justice will need to connect those separate stories while showing how its unconventional Trinity operates as a team.
The ongoing Absolute books will continue moving forward alongside the crossover. In Absolute Batman, Bruce Wayne is recovering after his encounter with Scarecrow but is headed toward another confrontation with Joker. Nick Dragotta will take a break from art duties for issue #26, with Cliff Chiang stepping in for a Barbara Gordon-focused installment. The series will then pause for a month before returning in January 2027.
Absolute Superman is nearing the conclusion of its extended Brainiac storyline in the next issue from Aaron and Ferreyra. Once that arc closes, the title will send its Superman further into space, opening the door to a broader science-fiction phase for the series.
Meanwhile, Absolute Wonder Woman, written by Kelly Thompson, will introduce its Absolute take on Cheetah in issue #25. Artist Hayden Sherman also teased the later arrival of Silver Swan. Those additions will expand Wonder Woman's rogue's gallery within a universe that has consistently reworked iconic characters in dramatic ways.
Elsewhere in the line, Pornsak Pichetshote confirmed that Absolute Green Lantern is growing into a 12-issue maxi-series. An Absolute Black Canary one-shot is also planned, with Belén Ortega handling the artwork.
Starfire, Vixen, and Static lead a new wave of solo comics
DC's forthcoming solo titles will give more space to heroes outside the publisher's usual Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman spotlight. The first of the trio is Starfire, launching in April 2027 from writer Alyssa Wong and artist Belén Ortega. The creative team's stated tonal shorthand--Red Sonja meeting One Piece--implies a mix of swashbuckling adventure, fantasy action, and larger-than-life personality for the longtime Titan.
Vixen is being developed by writer Stephanie Williams and artist Khary Randolph. Set in Detroit, the series is intended to make Mari McCabe feel more distinct as a lead character, including adjustments to the presentation of her powers. The creators also teased a romantic interest with a connection to the Bat-Family. The project has reportedly been in development for years, making its formal reveal especially significant for Vixen fans.
Milestone hero Virgil Hawkins will return in a new Static series written by Cody Ziglar with art by Diego Olortegui. Ziglar's goal is to restore Static to a more prominent position, and the book will heavily feature Rocket as well. That pairing offers a chance to explore the wider Milestone universe rather than isolating Virgil from the community and legacy that helped make the character enduringly popular.
Horror, magic, and the Old West broaden DC's slate
Several upcoming books will steer DC away from conventional capes-and-crimefighting formulas. The Demon, launching October 27, is both written and drawn by James Harren. It centers on Etrigan and Jason Blood, with Blood redesigned as a man who has endured for a century while wrestling with his supernatural curse. The story follows the trail of the Mute Face, a missing wizard tormented by a voice from Hell, and asks whether Jason can defend the world without losing his soul.
The Swamp Thing: Hallowed Ground is a standalone release from writer Steve Foxe and artist Riccardo Federici. Specific plot information remains limited, but the announced material points to a gothic, grotesque visual identity suited to Swamp Thing. The book follows the recent publication of Swamp Thing 1989, which completed Rick Veitch's acclaimed late-1980s run on the character.
For western and horror readers, Jonah Hex and the Shadow of Death will be a six-issue limited series written and illustrated by Michael Walsh. It is the first solo Jonah Hex comic in a decade. The story finds the veteran gunslinger emerging from retirement after a sinister preacher arrives in town, with the book described as a horror western that recalls the mood of Hellboy and Unforgiven.
Finally, DC Black Label will publish DC Black Label Presents Zatanna, a mature-reader, out-of-continuity one-shot from Terry and Rachel Dodson. Zatanna's magic-centered world is especially well suited to the looser boundaries of Black Label, though story specifics have not yet been detailed. The imprint is also preparing Green Lantern: The Dying of the Light by Jason Aaron and Tirso, starring an older Hal Jordan imprisoned with a power ring that is gradually running out of energy.
With legacy heroes, experimental alternate-universe storytelling, genre comics, and long-awaited character spotlights all represented, DC's post-NYCC publishing plans are notably broad. The next major question is how Absolute Justice reshapes its universe--and whether the startling Bruce Wayne mystery can become an equally defining moment for Batman's main continuity.
